The Dabrian Diaries | Reflections from the Burren
At Dabrian, we have come to believe that time is one of life’s greatest luxuries.
Not the kind of luxury that flaunts itself, but something quieter. The freedom to wake without an alarm. To sit with a morning coffee and watch the farm come to life. To take a walk without a destination or spend an afternoon doing very little and feel entirely content. These are simple things, yet increasingly, they are the things we struggle to make room for.
For a long time, luxury in travel was defined by what a place could offer. Beautiful interiors, exceptional service, carefully considered details.
We believe those things still matter. There is comfort in a beautifully made bed, pleasure in good quality surroundings, and a sense of being cared for when someone has thought about the little things before you arrive. But we have always felt that the greatest luxury is what happens beyond those details. It is having the time and headspace to enjoy them.
Time to read the book you brought but never seem to open. Time for conversations that never seem to happen. Time to notice the way the animals move across the fields, the jumping flames of an open fire, or the extraordinary beauty of the ever changing weather. When staying at Dabrian we don’t believe every moment needs to be filled with an activity or an experience. Sometimes, the most restorative thing we can offer ourselves is the space to simply be.
And perhaps that is what makes time in nature so valuable. It asks very little of us.
When we began creating Dabrian, we wanted to create a place where people could experience the quieter pleasures of life, surrounded by nature but with all the comforts that make time away feel special. Our cabins and lodge have been thoughtfully designed to offer warmth, privacy and a connection to the landscape. There are opportunities to explore the Burren, discover local traditions and enjoy experiences that reflect this extraordinary part of Ireland.
But equally, there is permission to do none of those things.
To spend the morning lingering over breakfast. To watch the rain from the comfort of your cabin. To walk through the fields as evening settles over the farm. There is no particularly way to spend your time here. That, to us, is the point.
We live in a world that places enormous value on being busy. Our days are filled with commitments, our attention constantly drawn elsewhere, and even our holidays can become carefully planned exercises in making the most of every moment. Somewhere along the way, doing nothing has begun to feel like wasting time.
We see it differently.
An afternoon spent sitting outside, listening to the wind move through the trees, is not an afternoon lost. Neither is a slow breakfast, an unhurried walk or an evening spent talking long after the sun has gone down. These are often the moments we remember most. They rarely require much. Just the time and space to enjoy them.
There is a particular feeling we hope people take away from Dabrian. Not simply that they have stayed somewhere beautiful, but that they have had an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and enjoy the passing of time. Perhaps they leave having explored the Burren and discovered something new. Perhaps they leave having done very little at all. Either way, we hope they carry a little of that stillness home with them. Because, for us, the real luxury of Dabrian is not about escaping everyday life. It is about remembering how good life can feel when we give ourselves the time to enjoy it.
From the Burren, with love.
